The Great Migration, on its own terms

Discover

Northern Tanzania in the month the plains are at their fullest. Baobab country in the south, the floor of a collapsed volcano in the middle, and the short-grass and river-cut north, where two million animals pile up on a bank and eventually decide to cross.

This is a Founders’ departure, which means Adam and Vanessa are on it start to finish, not sending you off with a clipboard. Eighteen travelers. Private vehicles, so nobody spends the trip looking over a shoulder. Days that start before light and end long after dinner should have finished, because the conversation got good and nobody wanted to break it. Tanzania is the destination everyone has a picture of before they arrive. What surprises people is the quiet.

"The plains do not perform. You arrive, you wait, and then the horizon starts moving."

The next day is all Amboseli: the elephant herds out on the plain, a picnic lunch in the park, dinner at the boma.

The Journey

Day by Day

Day 1: Arusha
Day 1

Arusha

Arrive, and a first night near Arusha.

Into Kilimanjaro International, where you are met and driven to a lodge outside Arusha, the town at the foot of Mount Meru that every northern safari starts from. Nothing is asked of you on day one.

Day 2: South to Tarangire
Day 2

South to Tarangire

Lunch, then a twenty-minute flight into Tarangire.

After lunch, a short flight south to the Kuro airstrip and into Tarangire, the park of baobabs and the biggest elephant herds in northern Tanzania. Swala sits in a private corner of it: twelve tents, each with a deck looking over a waterhole the elephants, zebra and impala come down to. A first game drive in the afternoon, sundowners, dinner.

Day 3: Tarangire
Day 3

Tarangire

A full day in the park, and an optional drive after dark.

Out after lion and cheetah while the elephant herds work their way to the swamp. Take a picnic to a lookout and stay out all day, or come back to camp between the morning and afternoon drives. After dinner there is the option of a night drive, and Tarangire is one of the few places in northern Tanzania you can go out by moonlight: leopard, serval, genet, bat-eared fox and the eyes of bushbabies in the trees. The night drive is charged separately.

Day 4: Into the crater
Day 4

Into the crater

Fly to Manyara, then straight down to the crater floor.

A light aircraft to Manyara, a drive up into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and then over the rim and two thousand feet down onto the floor of a collapsed volcano. A private bush lunch on the crater floor, the afternoon among the herds, and then up to Crater’s Edge by Wilderness Collection for a sundowner looking back over the whole thing.

Day 5: The crater, again
Day 5

The crater, again

A second full day on the crater floor.

Back down for the whole day. The Lerai Forest for leopard, the open grassland where lion and cheetah lie and watch the wildebeest and zebra, the pools where the hippo sit out the heat, and black rhino, which this is one of the few places on earth you have a real chance of seeing. Another private lunch on the floor. For anyone who would rather spend a morning on foot, Crater’s Edge runs guided walks along the rim with a naturalist.

Day 6: North to the Serengeti
Day 6

North to the Serengeti

About an hour’s flight to the far north.

A light aircraft north over the plains to the Serengeti, and on to Kichakani, a mobile camp of ten tents that is struck and re-pitched twice a year to follow the migration. In September it stands in the northern Serengeti near the Kenyan border. An afternoon game drive, a drink by the fire, dinner.

Day 7: The river
Day 7

The river

A balloon at dawn, then a full day with the herds.

Up before dawn for a hot air balloon flight over the northern Serengeti, lifting off at first light and drifting low over the plains as the herds start to move, then breakfast out on the grass where you land. The rest of the morning is on the ground with the guides. In September the wildebeest and zebra are on and around the Mara River, with the lion, hyena, cheetah and leopard that follow them. Nobody can promise a crossing on a given morning. What we can promise is being in the right place with the day to wait. A slow afternoon at camp, and sundowners on the plains.

Day 8: Home
Day 8

Home

A last drive, then a flight to Kilimanjaro.

A last morning drive or a slow breakfast in camp, then a light aircraft to Kilimanjaro International, landing around one in the afternoon, where you are met and connected to your flight home. Book an international departure from the late afternoon onward.

Why Travel With Us

This isn't a generic expedition. It's a curated journey where the people who built West Zephyr travel alongside you—bringing years of insight into what makes adventure meaningful.

01

The Curation Runs Deep

Adam and Vanessa have spent years building relationships with world-class partners, guides, and lodges across the globe. Those relationships inform every element of this itinerary—the routes, the accommodations, the moments that most travelers never find. You're not getting a catalog trip; you're getting one shaped by people who've done this hundreds of times.

02

The Group Is the Experience

Every person on this expedition is intentionally selected. You're not joining a busload of strangers—you're stepping into a small group of curious, accomplished people who travel for meaning as much as adventure. The destination is extraordinary, but the real magic is who you experience it with.

03

You Travel with the Vision, Not Just the Brand

Most companies send staff. On Founders' Trips, Adam and Vanessa are there—sharing meals, joining excursions, present for the conversations that happen when remarkable people explore together. Our expert local partners handle every operational detail so you (and we) can simply be present.

Where You'll Stay

Your Home Bases

*Properties may change in rare circumstances, but never the quality or experience

Kitirua Plains Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary

Optional pre-trip extension · Amboseli, Kenya · 2 nights

Eleven suites and two two-bedroom suites on a private conservancy west of Amboseli, every one of them framing Kilimanjaro. This is the optional two-night start before the trip proper: a first game drive and a sundowner facing the mountain, a full day in Amboseli with a picnic lunch out in the park, and dinner at the boma. Fly into Nairobi on the 10th, on to Amboseli on the 11th, and on the 13th fly through to Tarangire to join the main group at Swala.

Lake Duluti Lodge

Just outside Arusha · 1 night

Nineteen chalets at the foot of Mount Meru, a short walk from Lake Duluti, a small crater lake ringed by forest. This is the first night of the main trip, for everyone not starting in Kenya: a slow evening after the long flight in, a walk down to the water or a canoe out on it if you want one, and a quiet night before the short flight south to Tarangire. Travelers on the Kenya extension skip this night and meet the group at Swala.

Swala, an A&K Sanctuary

Tarangire National Park · 2 nights

Twelve tented suites in a private corner of Tarangire, among acacias and old baobabs, each with a king bed, an ensuite bathroom and a deck looking over a waterhole the elephants, zebra and impala come down to. A plunge pool facing the plain, a dining room open on three sides, and dinner at the boma. Tarangire in September is dry enough that the river is the only water for a long way, which is why the elephant herds here are the biggest in northern Tanzania, and it is one of the few parks in the north where you can drive at night.

Crater’s Edge by Wilderness Collection

Ngorongoro Crater rim · 2 nights

Tented suites on stilts down a wooded slope on the north-eastern rim, a kilometre from the Lemala gate and a few minutes from the road down. Each suite has a fireplace, a copper bath and glass onto the crater. At seven and a half thousand feet the evenings are genuinely cold, which is what the fire pit on the deck is for.

Kichakani, an A&K Sanctuary

Northern Serengeti · 2 nights

A mobile camp of ten tents that is struck and re-pitched twice a year to sit where the herds are. In September it stands in the Lamai Wedge, the Serengeti’s northern corner against the Kenyan border, within reach of the Mara River crossings. Ten tents is the whole camp for eighteen travelers and two hosts, so there is nobody else in it.
